SAFe Glossary
The core terms of the Scaled Agile Framework, explained simply — in plain language, one definition at a time.
Agile Release Train
A long-lived team of Agile teams (typically 50–125 people) that plans, commits, and delivers value together on a shared cadence.
Program Increment
A fixed timebox (usually 8–12 weeks) in which an ART delivers value, bookended by PI Planning and an Inspect & Adapt.
PI Planning
The cadence-based planning event where every team on an ART plans the next PI together and commits to shared objectives.
Value Stream
The sequence of steps used to deliver value to a customer. SAFe organizes Agile Release Trains around value streams.
Weighted Shortest Job First
A prioritization model that sequences work by cost of delay divided by job size, so the most economically valuable work goes first.
Lean-Agile Center of Excellence
A small team that leads and sustains the SAFe transformation across the organization.
RTE — Release Train Engineer
The servant leader and chief facilitator of an Agile Release Train.
PO / PM
Product Owner owns the team backlog; Product Manager owns the ART backlog and product strategy.
Iteration
A short, fixed timebox (often two weeks) in which Agile teams deliver a working increment of value.
Lean Budget
Funding allocated to a value stream rather than to individual projects, governed by lightweight guardrails.
Solution Train
The construct that coordinates multiple ARTs and suppliers building one large solution together.
Continuous Delivery Pipeline
The flow of continuous exploration, integration, and deployment that enables releasing value on demand.
Inspect & Adapt
A regular event at the end of each PI where the ART demonstrates results and identifies improvements.
Built-in Quality
Building quality into every increment as it’s created, rather than inspecting it in afterwards.
Innovation & Planning Iteration
A buffer iteration each PI reserved for innovation, planning, and slack.
Business Owners
Key stakeholders accountable for the business value an Agile Release Train delivers.
